A Tale of Two Cities

This is a tale of two union organizing campaigns.

The first is at an AT&T facility in Burlington, VT.. AT&T does not interfere when it's workers choose to talk to a union. The workers are allowed to choose whether they want to ignore the union, vote by secret ballot or just sign cards. It's a lot like how life would be under the Employee Free Choice Act. This is a quick and easy read, check it out. It will make you feel good.

The second story is not pretty. A WalMart tire facility in Kingman, AZ tried to unionize and learned a lesson in how life is without the Employee Free Choice Act. The mere mention of the word 'Union' at a WalMart store will get you fired. The kneejerk reaction from the corporate office is swift and brutal. This is an ugly story, but it shows why current labor laws need to be reformed.

The Employee Free Choice Act may be the next big act to take the stage in Washington. We all know what the stakes are in this fight. Will we rebuild the middle class with strong unions or will we condemn our children to low pay service industry jobs?

This is a tale of two cities, but it's also a tale of the Employee Free Choice Act.

Remember the old movies about the ruthless corporation dumping toxic waste in the name of profit? Big employers doing whatever is good for them, and ignoring the honor and dignity of the workers and the community? It's a common theme in the movies.

Well the real movie and the best story is WalMart isn't it? The real things they have done would seem horrific to sheltered movie goers who have never been intimidated or shoved around. If the real truth were told wouldn't they be shocked as hell? After all, they get shocked at the movies!

Problem is that unless it affects more of us, there are millions who just sit there watching and waiting to see how it will turn out. Just like watching a movie. If the big bad company is not taking their dignity away, how do we get them to get involved and get them to card?

Limbaugh and Beck revere Ronald Regan. He and deregulation paved the way for WalMart and the bad boys of Wall Street to literally take over the world of money. Greed never had it so good. The mantra of those times was "screw the little guys, more for us. Let's get big"!

They certainly did, while the middle class began to shrink. Of course, this does not concern entertainers like Limbaugh, Beck and a few others who make millions and millions by tossing gas on fires.

Time has come to reign in the giants and force them to share the spoils they took and now call their own. They now believe they own all of us. They believe they have a natural right to everything. They actually believe that lowly and ordinary people who work hard to build their companies deserve nothing but a dime.

They will try to burn everything down before they give in to the will of the people. Their evil greed knows no bounds. In feudal times these people were called LORDS. We were called SERFS.

"Nothing is new under the sun" as Solomon said in the Bible. It is just bigger now, and affects more families who have been taught to believe in freedom, prosperity, hard work, honesty and ingenuity to achieve their dreams.

Those good things have absolutely nothing to do with the likes of WalMart.

Lawmakers must vote in the Employee Free Choice Act. We need to hold our elected officials accountable to us. Write letters now! I pray for no more Walmarts! The Bible belt may have spawned Walmart, but I truly believe God had nothing to do with it.
